All about Baobab!

Why Baobab?

We believe Baobab is the superfruit of superfruits! The mighty baobab tree produces some of the most nutrient dense pods in the plant world. To compare it to some of our nations favourites Baobab has more vitamin C than an orange, more potassium than bananas, more iron than red meat, more magnesium than spinach and has the highest antioxidant content of all whole fruits. Baobab also tops the charts when compared to other superfoods boasting a higher antioxidant content then both Acai and Goji berries, which are famous for their antioxidant capabilities!

Sustainability

The Baobab tree can take over 100 years to mature and produces regular pods that can be harvested. Until now, ancient Baobab trees have been cleared to make way for what local farmers see as more profitable crops such as maize and fruit trees, or even cut down to make firewood. By harvesting and benefitting from the fruit of the Baobab tree, we are paving the way ensuring that the trees are valuable enough so that they are no longer cut down.

But both humans and animals alike have had a relationship with the Baobab tree for centuries. It has always been consumed by Kenyans and the vitality of Baobab is reflected in the health of the locals. The fruit pulp has the same benefits to animals as it does us. It’s a nourishing staple for many animals (so much so that it has gained the nickname ‘monkey bread’), while its vast trunk provides much needed shade to grazing herds during the hotter months.

The future

With our ever busying schedules, and knowing what we do now about the importance of incorporating a healthy diet into our everyday lives, superfoods have become a useful tool to help us do just that. Superfoods are called superfoods because they have the ability to provide us with a big chunk of the essential nutrients we require every day, in an easy and tasty way!

From adding a few teaspoons of Baobab into a delicious vegan brownie mix, to stirring it in to our morning yoghurt or porridge, superfoods can be added into our diets a variety of ways. It has never been easier to and tastier to achieve our reference nutrient intakes!
